SMALL MOMENTS

Harry Callahan’s picture of his wife and daughter, 1954.

“Jessie Bites” (1985) one of the many powerful moments captured by Sally Mann of her family. To be fair, however, Mann’s photos are not true “small moments” but fictional accounts of small moments; she works in large format and prepares her shots carefully. For me, still, they inspired a lot of small-moment photography.

>A few personal examples of my family archive — almost all “Small Moments”

No birthday parties or “smile” — but grumpy and sad kids, joyous moments, sibling conflicts, peaceful reveries, and even sick midnight vigils…
